At least 16 individuals lost their lives and over 40 sustained injuries when assailants shot at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian police are describing as a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, authorities have announced the death toll stands at 16, encompassing one of the suspected attackers. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were admitted to the hospital.

The deceased are yet to be officially identified, but police believe their ages span between 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Reportedly a father of five children, he served as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She told the events before the shooting, stating they had been standing together when the gunfire erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Officially, the Foreign Minister said that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the statement continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was a fatality during the attack, according to reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with a number in a critical state. The injured include two officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Described as a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He stated he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He described he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
