New York Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Incident
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the player will be OK after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during their recent conversation.
“What reassures me, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn commented. “His wife and child, they are holding up and he is expected to recover fully.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd would leave the hospital, where his condition is described as critical but stable.
“Still unsure,” Glenn remarked. “However, I can share, hearing him speak, his attitude was encouraging. Once more, that puts my mind at ease, that he feels like that and he’s talking that way.”
NYPD shared surveillance images earlier this week of a suspect in the incident involving Boyd. The reason behind the incident remains under investigation and authorities said it is unknown if Boyd was targeted. There were no additional victims according to reports.
The attack took place around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning about halfway between the famous arena and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, twenty-nine, was taken to a local hospital after being shot in the abdomen, according to authorities. The assailant escaped.
Glenn shared Boyd has been on his mind “a great deal” since he heard about the shooting. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a child.
“My initial concern, he has a new baby,” Glenn noted. “My mind went to his family, worrying about his newborn and I want to make sure that he’s OK. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There’s a process to this, which I won’t get into, but I’m happy at the fact that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd was inactive in the present campaign, after joining the team, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on 18 August with an injury to his shoulder that involved surgical repair.
He signed with New York as a new signing in spring and was projected as an important component of an improved special teams group under Glenn and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during preseason drills on early August and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad during the entire campaign while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn stated. “Certainly, he is a regular at our matches. He’s fully engaged. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by the Vikings out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad after that. Boyd signed a one-year contract worth $1.6m with New York in the spring.
