Fashion legend Antony Price, the influential UK-based designer behind a series of unforgettable images favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died at the age of 80.

He was celebrated for his defined forms and dramatic aesthetics, including the soft-colored suits that became famous from rock band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".

"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement across their platforms."

This news arrives less than a month after he presented his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Artist Lily Allen modelled a dress that paid homage to the notorious black velvet "dress" once worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.

A Pioneering Career

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price headed for London during the sixties to study at the esteemed Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he began designing menswear at Stirling Copper and was the creator of the tight, button-detailed trousers that Sir Mick Jagger famously wore during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show opened with looks from supermodel Jerry Hall, who later wore the bridal gown Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A long-time collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the memorable jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to blend menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in shaping sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "genuine original," according to the UK's fashion authority.

In the 1990s, he started creating outfits for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, which included various looks for her tour of the United States following her marriage.

After a career spanning half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London just last month in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.

  • Defined Shapes: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Theatrical Flair: Defining an era of music fashion.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.

The industry says farewell to a true visionary whose impact on the visual landscape of music remains profoundly felt.
