One of the original creators behind the famous frozen dessert company Ben & Jerry's has stated that corporate owner Unilever prevented the launch of an innovative pro-Palestinian frozen dessert product.

Ben Cohen, who co-founded the company alongside Jerry Greenfield, revealed how he will personally create the controversial flavor within an individual collection showcasing causes Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking out about.

Longstanding Conflict Between Creators and Parent Company

This latest development intensifies the continuing conflict among the world-famous ice cream maker with its corporate parent, the British consumer goods giant that acquired Ben & Jerry's since 2000.

The co-founders maintain that Unilever and its ice cream arm Magnum improperly prevented their company from "fulfilling its ethical commitments".

The Fruit Sorbet as a Symbol for Solidarity

Mr. Cohen revealed through an Instagram video that he is creating a new watermelon-flavored frozen dessert, asking for consumer ideas for naming options and potential ingredients.

“I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen commented from a cooking set. “I'm creating a watermelon-flavored frozen dessert that calls for lasting ceasefire for Palestinians while demanding addressing the harm that was done there.”

This particular fruit has become a symbol for support for the Palestinian people due to its coloration, that mirror the colors in Palestine's national banner – red, green, black and white.

Previous Activism plus Recent Developments

In 2021, the ice cream company ceased sales of their merchandise in territories under Israeli control, resulting in Unilever selling their Israel business over to a local licensee, thereby permitting ongoing distribution in disputed territories.

The new product line will be developed under Ben's Best, the activist ice cream brand which was first established several years back for endorsing former US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders via the product "Bernie's Return".

Leadership Shifts and Upcoming Plans

Mr. Cohen indicated how he will develop additional frozen dessert varieties focusing on concerns that the company was silenced from addressing publicly due to corporate restrictions.

This development comes after partner Jerry Greenfield resigned from the company recently, after decades with the organization, citing worries regarding how its independence was compromised after Unilever's decision to restrict their advocacy work.

Previously, Mr. Cohen stated how "Jerry has a really big heart and this conflict with our parent company was breaking it."

"My heart leads me to keep working within the organization to advocate for its independence ensuring that the company can fulfill the social mission, the principles that established its foundation and has maintained for decades," he explained to journalists.
